SHEPHERDSTOWN -- This Sunday, families across the United States will be celebrating Mother's Day within the parameters of COVID-19 pandemic social distancing measures. While this "new normal," as Gov. Jim Justice called it on Monday, is changing how Shepherdstown's residents are commemorating motherhood, one aspect of their Mother's Day celebrations may be staying the same.

On April 22, Pressed Flour announced it would be re-opening after closing for a month. Since its bakery location at 111 West German Street is not large enough for customers to observe social distancing, owner Alisha Hanlin announced it would be offering curbside pickup for food that had been preordered and prepaid for.

"After thinking I could wait out our more austere safety measures, it's become clear we're in this pandemic business for the relatively long haul," Hanlin said in a Facebook post. "After some supply chain and delivery issues, I'm back in the kitchen and cooking and baking again to get some product out the door.

"Menus will be announced as soon as the product is available, and hours will be determined based on what works for customers who are picking up," Hanlin said. "You'll call inside when you've arrived, at a pre-determined time, and I'll bring your order out to your car in proper attire of mask and gloves."

Hanlin explained that she was taking every reasonable precaution to ensure her customers would feel comfortable buying her food.

"I've been the only person in the bakery for a month. My efforts at isolation and social distancing when running essential errands have been devoted. I have masks, endless gloves and disinfectant, and 15-plus years experience of upholding kitchen-grade health and sanitation standards," Hanlin said. "You're in good hands!"

On Monday evening, Hanlin announced she would begin selling baked goods for Mother's Day weekend. She published a menu of food options available for pre-order, including Peach Pound Cake, french macarons, white chocolate truffles, strawberry dark chocolate brownies, cookies and sweet milk scones with lavender honey, clotted cream, lemon curd and sea salt whipped butter.

"I will be offering curbside pick-up of this select menu of treats for Mother's Day," Hanlin said, mentioning community members who need to stay in social isolation could arrange to have their orders picked up and delivered to their homes through Shepherdstown Shares.

"To order, please send a [Facebook] message including your name, number and order. I will confirm receipt via Facebook and arrange pre-payment and a pickup window with you. Pick-ups will be staggered across Saturday and Sunday to best serve you and keep from forming crowds," Hanlin said. "Looking forward to hearing from and seeing you soon!"
